The Lil' Pie Chart logo.

Lil' Pie Chart is an up and coming producer who first developed guitar playing from death metal influences/samples for friends. His childhood inspirations that helped him develop into a guitar player/music fanatic were filled with Stevies & Jims: Steve Vai, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Jimmy Page. His close friend and upcoming producer Tre (@trebeats33) and Superstar O were the ones who motivated/inspired him to make beats. He ended up playing in multiple bands from an array of genres (jazz, bluegrass, funk) and has since blossomed those vast sounds into his hip-hop beats.

This present time is a new journey for the producer. He made a conscious choice to stop making music for 6 whole years from certain circumstances of his band mates, skill level, discipline and overall situation. At the end of last year he became revitalized per say from a friend (Tre) asking him to do guitar samples around October of 2018 and would soon run with this new spark of creativity to do mass production. The current alloy mindset gave him ideas for multiple avenues of sound waves.

"-Skill level prevented any of the groups I put together from going anywhere. One of the main things I like about making beats is the entire thing comes from my vision for a song."

Pie Charts tracks like "Trunk 110" has an eerie taste from the beginning with soft prominent click clacks that add more character. Almost gives me a nostalgic feel from the opening theme music of The X Files. Throughout most of his tracks he displays insane consistency with a story like flow of his beats. Each one has a specific unique sound of synth, sample, etc. added that dances with the bass to create a new vibe and new potential. "Voodoo 120" displays this example perfectly with a small build up that drops into bouncy retro 808's and lullaby keys that follow after. As soon as i heard this track it took me back to 2002 Timbaland with harmonies that sound like waterfalls.

The producer has always had an innate sense of music since he was a youngin but had no plans/goals for it to become a career outlet. The spontaneous fortunate circumstance of meeting with the right person can spark a drive; and that particular drive ended up changing his life/path. He has made immense progress from the last leg of last year, as of recently hes worked with Swede from 808 Mafia & RMB Justize from Taylor Gang to help spread his creations along with sending a plentiful amount of beats to labels.

"The path is clear and I’m gonna spend as many long nights and weekends making music that is authentically me until I make it-"

CHASE: How did this producer name come about?

PIE: I’ve been working on an app and while I was doing wire frame designs for each page I needed to mock up a list view of artist profiles so I had to come up with names. I found some basic icons for the mock profile pictures and I’d make a rapper name based on them. “Lil Leafy, Lil bike, Lil waterdrop” etc and one of them was “Lil Pie Chart”. A few weeks later I started making beats and needed a name to go by and that was the most ridiculous one haha. I’ve been told it’s memorable, and definitely sticks out in a crowd of “badass” names.

CHASE: You said your go to is death metal, would you say that influences most of your production or do you try to expand into other areas?

PIE: Surprisingly no haha. I grew up on a lot of stuff, Jazz, blues, funk, blue grass even. I was in a lot of bands as a kid and young adult. I honestly don’t know what specific influences I have but when something sounds good to me it’s safe to say it sounds good because of some long ingrained taste.

CHASE: Being a producer, having that background of being in bands, do you sometimes use your own live playing on guitars, synths, etc. on your beats? Is that realm of your artistry something you are past now or would you say you’re still planning on working with bands?

PIE: Yeah I’ve played guitar in a few but I’m still learning everything else to do. Haha made my first on 10/2/18. As far as playing with people again I haven’t thought about it yet. Before I did guitar samples for my friend starting in October, I hadn’t played music in about 6 years. Now the flood gates have opened! But I stopped playing before out of frustration. Incongruity in terms of vision, drive, discipline, skill level prevented any of the groups I put together from going anywhere. One of the main things I like about making beats is the entire thing comes from my vision for a song and I don’t have to rely on a hungover drummer to bring it to life!

CHASE: Understood. Do you have a vision of where and/or how you’d like your music to go or do you do it as just a basis of your current expression of creativeness/therapeutic session?

PIE: Plaques! Billboard hits! Haha but really that’s the goal. I’ve been working with some people to get stuff out there namely Swede from 808 Mafia, Deedotwill, and RMB Justize from Taylor Gang. I’ve also started making my own contacts independently now and I’ve got 20 some beats going to labels this weekend. As far as my music, I’ve wanted to be doing this since I was a kid, I just didn’t know it yet! Music has always been my outlet, but I never saw a way to make a living with it until now. (Still have a day job as a construction worker) the path is clear and I’m gonna spend as many long nights and weekends making music that is authentically me until I make it, and then I’m going to keep going as hard as before and help as many people as I can however that may be.

CHASE: Thank you for your time man. I sincerely appreciate it. Anything else you wanna say to the peoples of the world?

PIE: Maybe a shout out to my good friend and beat mentor Tre. He’s shown me everything I know and is about to break into the industry big time. He’s on Instagram @trebeats33.
